To understand the genius of John Moxham, one must delve into the origins that shaped his remarkable trajectory. The tendrils of history and individual destiny intertwine, casting John not just as an innovator in his fields but as a byproduct of the times he lived in. Born at a time when the world was recovering from one great conflict and unknowingly heading towards another, John grew up in a world of contrasts. The simplicity of model craft building, a childhood passion, stood in stark juxtaposition to the complexity of the global geopolitical landscape. Encouraged by his father, he was ushered into the meticulous world of aircraft design, a realm where precision wasn’t just desired—it was the very difference between life and death.


At Folland Aircraft, young John worked on the leading edges of the DeHavilland Venom. It wasn’t just metal and designs he was grappling with, but the weight of responsibility, ensuring that these flying marvels would withstand the tests of war. The Cold War—a time of shadows, secrets, and supersonic ambitions—saw him dedicating himself to the intricate world of aero-dynamics. As he laboured on the Gloster Javelin, the English Electric Lightning, and more, it was evident that John wasn’t merely a participant in this era; he was a defining element of it.

Yet, as the winds of change swept through the world and through John’s life, he found himself at a crossroads. The RAF sharpened his skills, but also exposed him to a different call—the siren song of the water. As naturally as a river finds its course, John transitioned from aircraft to powerboat design.

 

By 1972, alongside Alan Burnard at Fairey Marine, John embarked on another epoch of innovation. His reputation as a hydro-dynamist solidified as he masterminded hull designs, each one bearing the unmistakable mark of a Moxham—functional, innovative, and ahead of its time. From the current fast assault craft for the UK Special Forces to the resilient RNLI E-CLASS Mark I Lifeboat, the waters of the world became his canvas.

 

Today, at the zenith of his career, almost 90 and as passionate as ever, John is the linchpin behind Ultimate Boats. Our proprietary hull technology utilised in our range of high-performance craft have been intelligently designed to operate offshore in rough seas.

 

Its substantially lower attack angle to conventional hulls and 25-degree deadrise means that it will easily slice through rough water without launching and limited slamming. It also produces better quality waterflow across the propellors increasing grip which provides superior manoeuvrability and tighter turning with little loss of speed.

 

Its major practical advantage is the helm’s ability to easily maintain a constant visual on the horizon through its linear transition onto the plane which is derived by mitigating stern squat and associated bow lift. Overall, our craft will provide greater comfort in all weathers by delivering intuitive handling, exceptional seakeeping and directional stability.
